Horizon Records was an American indie label founded in 1960 by Dave Hubert. It began as a folk and blues imprint, then evolved significantly throughout the 1970s when it became an imprint of A&M Records focusing on jazz and pop.
During its “golden era” (roughly 1974–1978), Horizon stood out for its high production values, artful packaging (gatefold covers, detailed liner notes, high-quality audio), and a roster of serious jazz talent. You’ll find names like Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Jim Hall, Charlie Haden, Ornette Coleman, (Thad) Jones & Mel Lewis, and Chet Baker. The label was ambitious: Horizon aimed to present sophisticated contemporary jazz for discerning listeners. Albums mixed straight-ahead jazz with avant-garde touches, melodic improvisation, occasional fusion elements, and artists who were pushing boundaries.
By 1979–80, Horizon had some breakout successes (for example Brenda Russell and Yellow Magic Orchestra) but ultimately closed due to declining sales. The jazz catalogue is now controlled by Verve Records.
