Stax Records, founded in 1957 in Memphis by Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton, became one of the most influential soul labels in history. Renamed in 1961, it created the signature Southern soul sound through its integrated house band, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, and artists like Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Sam & Dave, The Staple Singers, and Albert King.
More than a label, Stax remains a symbol of artistic innovation, racial integration, and the enduring power of soul music.
