Tamla Records

Tamla Records was founded in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan by Berry Gordy Jr.

It was the first label under what would later become the legendary Motown Records Corporation. Initially conceived as an outlet for rhythm and blues and soul recordings, Tamla was the seed from which Motown’s musical empire grew.

Its success laid the foundation for Motown’s status as “The Sound of Young America.”
